1) NEW YEAR GREETINGS
As this is our first newsletter in 2003, all of us at Organic Nutrition
would like to wish all our customers and newsletter readers a very healthy
and happy New Year!
We have been very busy in January and this, as well as the time we have
spent acquiring another health company has meant we have only been able
to produce one newsletter in January. We have now finalised the acquisition
of the new company and we will have some exciting new products to tell
you about very shortly.
As well as more 100% organic products and remedies, we will also be able
to offer you a comprehensive range of the highest quality vitamins, minerals
and weight loss products. We are very excited about this good news and
we also have some very interesting articles lined up for you over the
coming months.
So often at New Year we make decisions and resolutions for the year to
come, such as exercising more, quitting smoking, cutting back on chocolate,
the list can sometimes be endless! By February we are often back to our
old ways or view with envy those stronger willed who have stuck to their
resolutions. Very often one can feel guilty because they haven't kept
to their resolutions or even started.
What is the answer to this. Well it might sound overly simple but basically
you have to decide once again to do it. You have to set your goal once
again and not feel disappointed that you have lost focus. Simply resurrect
those old goals and start today!!! Action is the next key step. One must
take action. This will give you a great feeling.
The old saying "action speaks louder than words" is definitely true when
setting goals and working towards them. Action leads to more action and
your goals and objectives won't seem so far away once you start.
New resolutions or new positive outlooks can start at any time of the
year! One does not always need to wait for the New Year to begin a new
routine. Everyday is a new day, and every day holds whatever you choose
to create.
That is the wonderful thing about the future, it is a clean blank canvas
waiting for you to paint whatever you wish to create! So live this year
how you choose and make every day a new beginning.
Wishing you a happy, prosperous and healthy 2003!!!
From everyone at Organic Nutrition.

2) OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
Feeling tired and run down? Germs, bugs and viruses in your body drain
strength from your immune system. If your immune system is functioning
at its peak efficiency you will not even be aware that your body is fighting
off these attackers. But a weak immune system will leave you drained and
feeling "off colour".
The small evergreen olive tree was recognised in ancient times as a good
food source and for its leaves, which contain effective and natural wide-spectrum
antibiotic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal compounds. You may
have heard of the term "pathogen". A pathogen is a thing that causes disease
in the body. Oleuropein is a chemical found in Olive
leaves.
Oleuropein is a potent anti-microbial that has inhibited the growth of
almost every human pathogen it has been tested against, including viruses,
bacteria, protozoa (single celled organisms), fungi and yeast. Scientific
tests have shown that unlike synthetic antibiotics, it destroys only the
bad bacteria and protects the good.
Medical research suggests that when Oleuropein is taken orally, it searches
out and "inactivates" the bacteria. It does this by dissolving the outer
lining of the infectious germs and then it penetrates the infected cells,
thus inhibiting the replication of the bacteria. Once the immune system
is over-burdened with some types of pathogen, (virus, fungi, yeast, bacteria,
parasites) disease takes a foothold and sometimes it takes months and
even years to manifest itself. Meanwhile, the pathogens are in your body
draining strength from the immune system.
When Oleuropein is taken orally, two natural enzymes in the body (esteraize
and beta-glucosidase) convert the Oleuropein to elolenic acid. Elolenic
acid derived from this source helps strengthen the immune system. Unlike
synthetic antibiotics, olive leaf extract destroys only the bad bacteria
and protects the good.
Olive leaf extract
has been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, help arteries,
reduce twitching of muscles and possesses antioxidant effects. It also
reduces a fever, and is also used in treating persistent fevers.

3) WATER - THE SAFETY OF DRINKING TAP WATER
Do you know what is in your tap water?
When we turn on the tap, we expect clear, cool, life sustaining water
to flow. We can go without food for many days, but we cannot live for
a week without water. We are supposed to drink approximately six to eight
glasses of water every day. But in today's environment farming run-off
and acid rain, as well as pollutants from many other sources, flow into
our streams, lakes and rivers.
THE CONTAMINENTS
The health-threatening water pollutants that are supposed to be controlled
and regulated by governing bodies are divided into five groups:
1. Micro-organisms: some naturally occurring: bacteria, viruses
and parasites.
2. Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOS): fertilizers, pesticides,
solvents, leakage from underground storage tanks and many other man-made
products.
3. Inorganic Chemicals and Metals: toxic minerals such as mercury,
lead, and arsenic.
4. Radionucleides: natural and man-made radioactive metals and
minerals.
5. Additives: treatments added to water before delivery to consumers.
Here are more details:
Micro-organisms: Bacteria in water can cause typhoid, cholera,
and other diseases.
Fortunately, these can easily be detected and are killed when treated
with chlorine. Since the early 1900s, municipal water systems have treated
water with chlorine and have virtually eliminated these diseases. Viruses
can be present in untreated water and most of them can be killed with
chlorine disinfectant. Most western governments do a good job in reducing
these contaminants. However a small number of protozoan parasites like
Giardia and Cryptosporidium occur as hard-shelled cysts that are resistant
to chlorine disinfection, but these are not common.
Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOCs): There are thousands of synthetic
organic chemicals (SOCs) used in manufacturing everything from fertilizers
to plastic baby bottles. They are often toxic. Pesticides are designed
to kill living organisms that feed on valued crops. These compounds tend
to persist in nature and have widespread effect on plants and animals.
They are picked up in heavy rain and snowmelt run-off from agricultural
areas, urban streets, and construction sites.
SOCs can also occur in surface water as a result of airborne particles
from incinerators and smokestacks. Not enough is done to protect all of
us from this threat, but awareness of the problems is increasing. Some
positive steps are being taken but this needs to be increased.
Inorganic Chemicals and Metals: Of the harmful minerals in water,
cadmium, lead, and mercury are the most toxic. Water treatment plants
do a good job in reducing them to safer levels. Lead can leach into our
water supply from old pipes and taps in our houses. The use of fertilisers
and the raising of livestock contribute to high levels of nitrates and
nitrites. Sewers, septic tanks, and industrial plants are other sources
of these pollutants.
The increase in organic farming methods and food production does help
here, but again the volume needs to be dramatically increased.
Radionucleides: Radioactive materials occur naturally. Uranium
mining can produce radioactive run-off. Nuclear power plants and weapons
facilities, as well as disposal sites, are man-made sources of radioactive
minerals. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is a by-product of the
decay of radioactive minerals. If present, evaporation in an enclosed
space can cause this odourless and colourless gas to be inhaled.
Chlorine is the best-known additive at public water treatment plants.
For over 80 years it has been used in almost every public water system
and has proven to be very effective as a disinfectant. But now there is
evidence that when chlorine combines with organic chemicals in water,
toxic chemicals are sometimes formed. These toxic chemicals are called
disinfection by-products. Trihalomethanes have received the most attention.
Thankfully, relatively few of us live close to this kind of threat but
public awareness of the dangers needs to be increased so that public pressure
can be exerted when these risks are too high.
Additives: Fluoride is added at some water treatment plants and
is thought to harden children's teeth against decay. The implications
of its use are still being debated. Flocculents are chemicals added to
make water particles clot for more efficient filtering. Most community
water systems produce high quality drinking water within the government
standards.
Water from rivers and lakes (surface water) is usually low in minerals
but might have pollutants from micro-organisms, toxic organic chemicals,
and nitrates. Surface water can also be affected by illegal dumping and
run-off after heavy rain. Underground water is usually higher in minerals
and lower in micro-organisms than surface water, but may contain radon,
nitrates and other organic chemicals.
WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO TO HELP?
Think twice before you pour bleach or drain cleaner down your sink. Every
heavy-duty cleaner or synthetically based product you use is going directly
into the water system. Of course the water treatment facilities purify
the water, but the chemicals do not "disappear".
Many chemicals take decades to breakdown, or combine with others to form
poisons. All these need to be filtered out and in time add to the decline
in water quality. The impact of our liberal use of "wonderful modern cleaning
products" is taking its toll on the environment! There are many brands
of cleaning products, which are plant based or use natural minerals. These
products have minimal impact on the environment, and offer many environmental
advantages that benefit humans and animals.
One of the brands that we can recommend is Ecover. They offer ethical
cleaning products. We are not connected with this organisation in any
way but believe they offer great cleaning products and they too are concerned
about the environment. Their website is www.ecover.com
We must all try to conserve water by using less in our homes and gardens.
We must actively try to avoid dumping or flushing chemical materials into
drains, indoors or out. Just imagine if all of the chemicals you put down
the drain ended up in your next drink of water. Not a very pleasant thought!
A lot of people say, "Well, if I do make an effort, it won't be enough
to make any difference". The only thing I can say to that is if enough
people made an effort, it would make a difference. Also, it is a nice
feeling to know that you are doing your best to help out!
The next newsletter will have an article about how to get the best drinking
water.

4) GINSENG
Ginseng originated
in the Far East and it is now very widely used. The root is the active
part and it contains ingredients which help the body cope with stress
and it replenishes energy.
It has a number of other properties and these include strengthening the
immune system and increasing concentration and energy. Some of its uses
include for exhaustion, lack of concentration, weakness, loss of sex drive
and when used with other herbs it helps in getting rid of persistent infections.
One of its more unusual uses has been in easing the effects of jet lag
and travel sickness and this helps to show just how useful and versatile
this age old herb really can be.
By ensuring the herb is organic you are maximising the goodness of the
herb and ensuring it is as effective as possible.

Here is an inscription that was apparently found written inside an Egyptian
Tomb:
"One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters
keeps your doctor alive".
Does this mean that even the ancient Egyptians knew the importance of
eating the right foods etc?
